Welcome to Performing Arts

"Professional Theatre at its Finest!"

Come to the edge.
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It’s too high!
Come to the edge!
so they came
and he pushed
and they flew.

for a venue to match the quality of its performances."

Thunder River Theatre Company's Mission

To better understand the human experience, Thunder River Theatre Company creates professional and provocative theatre for the Roaring Fork Valley. Through our live theatre, educational outreach, a Latino theatre initiative and our TRTC for Young People, we participate in an ongoing dialogue with our audience on theatre's uniquely immediate terms. We have a gifted resident company of theatre artists, and an informed, dedicated and hard-working board of directors -- all of whom consistently meet the challenge of our mission. Our audience has proven itself to be discerning about art. TRTC aspires to meet their expectations. In today's technological world, we believe that it is imperative to maintain the legacy of live theatre. Our goal is to challenge and inspire our audience and ourselves.

Lon Winston - Founding Executive Artistic Director

What Your Valley's Theatre Critics Think of
Thunder River Theatre Company

"This resident company represents theatre at its finest as Lon Winston and his troupe anticipate, depict, define and elevate our daily struggles and uneasy dreams. Their productions shake us into uproarious laughter and sting our eyes with tears, sharpen our thoughts and sweeten our feelings. This is why we should all be extending a heartfelt thank you to Thunder River Theatre Company for its shining relevance to our lives in these uncertain times...(and) Thanks so much for bringing Broadway-quality theatre to the Valley."

...Judy King, Critic, The Valley Journal and The Glenwood Post Independent

"If you want to be entertained, you only have to look as far as Carbondale's professional theatre - Thunder River Theatre Company. Judging from the professionalism and consistently high-quality theatre that this group produces, it is certainly deserving of this valley’s support. This is a high quality professional company."

...Carrie Click, Aspen Journalist and Arts Critic

"In this season of Golden Globe awards and Oscar nominations, it is nice to know that we have our own professional troupe of actors in the Thunder River Theatre Company. This is real theatre. Not only for their gifts of acting, but also for their collaboration, passion and desire to nurture a theatre company here in the Roaring Fork Valley.

TRTC - Home Grown Professional Theatre
With A National Reputation

A Few Important Accomplishments - Since our Founding

TRTC was invited to Denver to perform their production of Arthur Miller's Elegy for a Lady and Some Kind of Love Story,
which was selected as the Critic's Choice of The Rocky Mountain News.

In 2004, the Classics Institute of New England, housed at Dartmouth College,
invited Lon Winston, TRTC's artistic director and Valerie Haugen, TRTC assoc. artistic director
to teach and perform from their productions of Greek Shards - Antigone and Greek Shards - Medea.
This year they were both invited back to teach a new course that they developed,
titled "Aristophanes and Michael Moore: The Golden Boys of Art and Social Criticism."
The course culminated in an original "Fahrenheit" created by the class and performed on the college campus.

For TRTC's Latino Theatre Initiative, we took the risk of producing the world
premiere of the English translation of The Bishop Has Her Day by Mexican playwright, Rafael Solana.
The production was attended by the entire staff of the Mexican Consulate in Denver.
The Colorado Council on Arts posted this success story on their Web site
as an example of community building, artistic excellence and professional follow-through.

The actors of our resident company have regularly been the recipients of the Glenwood Springs Post Independent
Locals' Choice Best Actor Award. Our recent production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play WIT was selected as Best Play.

TRTC has been highlighted on NPR, The Backstage Journal and many national newspapers for taking the lead on the national debate regarding the needs, support and the role of small nonprofit professional theatre companies with their communities and in their states.
