Death of a Salesman
by Arthur Miller

Co-Directed by Lon Winston and Valerie Haugen

Brooks Atkinson, one of the great theatre writers and critics of the 20th Century, described Death of a Salesman this way: "By common consent, this is one of the finest dramas in the whole range of the American Theatre." The name Willy Loman, the central character, is one of the most recognized names in theatre. The story of Willy's life is the poignant. sometimes humorous, ultimately tragic story of a man steeped in the go-getter gospel who never got beyond his own day-dream world. The drama of his downhill struggle is the heart-wrenching drama of wishful dreamers everywhere. The play reads as absorbingly as it performs, and has taken a permanent place in our written literature.

WHAT OUR PATRONS THOUGHT

"The play was simply fantastic! It was believable, moving and expert in acting, directing, set and costuming. Each moment was communicated with such care and sensitivity. Those moments have cumulatively made a powerful impression on me. I've have had several conversations about it in the last few days, and as far as I can tell, each audience member took away something moving and important to him/her. Thanks to Valerie and Lon for the significant artistic experience."

"Wow, fantastic opening night performance. REALLY GOOD."

"It is a wonderfully written play and your interpretation and acting (as well as the rest of the cast) was just marvelous. We really loved it."

"I was in New York in '49 when it opened; Since I clearly remember the ethos, the emotional ambiance of the time, the play was all the more powerful for me. The play, and Lon's performance of it, felt profoundly rooted in that time, and yet also of no special time nor place. I don't want to fall into hyperbole, but, over the years I have seen many of your productions. This may have been the best so far. Your acting was superb, and the directorial skills of both you and Valerie combined, shone crystal clear. I palpably felt that you were getting the very best out of your actors. I do not remember any single moment when I was brought up short with the familiar realization that, "after all, this is only a play". So, to sum it all up, once again, Congratulations!"

"Thanks for your outstanding interpretation of Willy Loman.
You captured the essence of the character and it moved me."

"Lon, it was fabulous. Everyone was on!!
New young performers also."

We're so fortunate to have the TRTC in Carbondale and all the talent that it draws. The play was fantastic."

"Bravo to the cast on Friday night!!"

"You had to be Willy Loman in an earlier life!! You were born to perform the role. Linda was equally born to the role of wife."
"The entire cast and play was outstanding...Congratulations on yet another exceptional production."

Salesman is my favorite play, period, and you all honored it well.
We both were moved by all the performances and decisions. Attention was paid.

"GREAT SHOW! I AM REALLY PROUD OF THE THEATRE."

Thanks so much for bringing that great play so wonderfully alive. And thanks for passing on Miller's thought that tragedy inplies more optimism than does comedy. Your performance tonight sent me home thanking my higher power for many undeserved blessings, not the least of which is watching you all at work.

"We saw Death of a Salesman last Friday and it was AWESOME! Your actors, the set, everything was wonderful."
