THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF OUR YOUTH PROGRAMS

THE GOLDEN RULE: We value the importance of every individual child and teach our students to recognize and honor each other's talents.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: We model and teach the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

OPEN TO ALL: We welcome children of all religions, cultures and economic backgrounds.

PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE: We strive to achieve the highest standard of quality programming, excellence in instruction, and trustworthiness.

A HEALTHY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: By encouraging our students to value a healthy spirit, mind and body, we create a space for learning that can significantly develop a child's creativity.

PHILANTHROPY: We help children experience the joy of giving and helping others.

WINTER/SPRING AFTER-SCHOOL-PROGRAM
January 11, 2012 - April 1, 2012 (13 Classes)
Class time is from 4:15 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.

Running the program for several weeks will give your children the necessary attention to grow their talents and love for the theatre.

The program is designed more on process than product. There will not be a full-blown production at the end, although on the evening of the last class (March 23) there will be a presentation allowing you to see what your child has learned. Goals and objectives include:

Teaching the skills necessary for participating in theatre productions
Being able to successfully audition
Developing strong performance skills
Understanding what it takes to be a theatre artist
Helping students to become responsive to their fellow players
Understanding the need of creating a performance environment through behaviors
Learning basic rules of focus and story-telling

These skills can't begin too early - they will increase confidence and develop a deeper love of theatre and drama. These goals will be facilitated through theatre games and improvisation. Additional concentration will be given to instructing students in healthy singing technique and developing basic music-reading skills in the Kodaly tradition of music games and singing together.

The Teacher: TAMELA "TAMMY" KENNING is a magnificent addition to TRTC. She is gentle, loving, kind, fun and an incredible teacher. She is a professional singer/actor and recording artist, and music/drama educator for over 20 years, and has directed musicals and improvisational theatre with children throughout the region. She is currently the drama teacher at the Glenwood Middle School, as well as TRTC's director of kid's programming. Tammy studied most recently at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Kodaly Institute Kecskemet, Hungary, and in Urbino, Italy. She has an MA in Music Education with an emphasis in the Kodaly Concept. She has also directed choirs and sung in musicals and operas. Her current work focus is inspiring parents and care-givers to sing with their children.

The Kodaly Concept
Pedagogy
Using these principles as a foundation, Kodaly's colleagues, friends, and most talented students developed the actual pedagogy now called the Kodaly Method. Many of the techniques used were adapted from existing methods. The creators of the Kodaly Method researched music educational techniques used throughout the world and incorporated those they felt were the best and most suited for use in Hungary.
Child-developmental approach
The Kodaly Method uses a child-developmental approach to sequence, introducing skills in accordance with the capabilities of the child. New concepts are introduced beginning with what is easiest for the child and progressing to the more difficult. Children are first introduced to musical concepts through experiences such as listening, singing, or movement. It is only after the child becomes familiar with a concept that he or she learns how to notate it. Concepts are constantly reviewed and reinforced through games, movement, songs, and exercises.

There are always after-school programs available all over the valley - but TRTC's is unique. We hope you will encourage your "future performers" once again to be part of TRTC's Unique Kid's Programming.

Tuition is only $150 for 11 weeks of drama training. (If your child qualifies for FREE lunch - with documentation from their school - we will give the child a 50% scholarship.)

Please mail your check to TRTC, 67 Promenade, Carbondale, CO 81623 by January 5, 2011. Would you also reply to this and let me know if you are planning on enrolling your child.

Thank you for trusting TRTC with your children
